From Delhi and Mumbai, direct flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in about 6 to 8 hours. If you are taking a connecting flight through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Jeddah, to Mauritius, the total flight time is 10 to 13 hours.

The main airport is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, in the southeast of the island near a town called Plaisance. It is approximately 48 km from Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.

There is also a smaller domestic airport, the Plaine Corail Airport on Rodrigues Island. You can choose this airport only if you want to add on to your Mauritius trip, or if you want to add more solitude and peace to the far off islands.

One big thing that influences airfare is when you purchase your tickets. Prices of flight tickets may vary depending on when you book and travel, especially during peak season. The ticket rates to Mauritius may go up for the October to December window.

Where are the best airlines to fly to Mauritius: There are various carriers flying on the India-Mauritius route,

Air Mauritius (MK) : National carrier of Mauritius. It has the most direct flights from Indian cities. It is also known for good Mauritian hospitality onboard and decent service quality. This is the airline to go for if you want the most direct, hassle-free journey.

Air India (AI): India’s national airline on the Delhi and Mumbai routes. Good option if you want to avoid having to exchange currency on board. With Hindi-speaking crew onboard, you might find a sense of familiarity during your flight.

About SSR International Airport, Mauritius

The main gateway to the island is the SSR Airport (Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport). Named for the country’s first prime minister, it is one of the busiest airports in the Indian Ocean region.

Main facts:

• Location: South east of Mauritius at Plaisance
• Distance from Port Louis : 48 kms ( 40 to 60 minutes by road )

The airport recently received a major terminal upgrade and features excellent amenities including duty-free shopping, currency exchange counters, SIM card kiosks, a number of restaurants and comfortable lounges.

Arriving and getting a SIM card: You can pick one up at the airport from one of the telecom counters near the arrivals hall. Coverage is good in Mauritius on the island. Wi-Fi is also easily found in hotels and restaurants.

Airport to Hotel: Getting Around After You Land 

You've arrived in the country. Now, how are you going to get to your hotel?"

There are three main options:

Airport transfer (recommended) Booked in advance: Most hotels in Mauritius offer airport transfer. Book it when you confirm your stay. A private transfer will cost you between MUR 800 and MUR 2,000 (approx INR 1,400 to INR 3,500) depending on how far your resort is. Plus, it’s the easiest option, especially after a long flight.

Licensed metered taxi: Taxis wait just outside the arrivals exit. Always use the official and licensed taxis only. These are clearly marked. A taxi from the airport to Port Louis will cost about MUR 1,200-MUR 1,500. Expect to pay between MUR 2,000 and MUR 3,000 for the north resort areas.

Public bus: Mauritius has a good bus network. Buses run from the airport area to the main towns, but most routes do not cover the majority of resort areas. This option is good if you are staying in Port Louis or a town centre but not if you have heavy luggage or your hotel is in a coastal resort zone.

Mauritius Visa for Indian Citizens

Indian passport holders do not have to apply for a visa in advance. Indians get visa-free entry into Mauritius with a stay of up to 90 days. You get the entry stamp on arrival at immigration.
