Vietnam looks small on a map.

Then you start planning a trip and realize the weather has other ideas.

In the same week, one part of the country can be enjoying sunshine and blue skies while another is battling storms, floods, and enough humidity to make your clothes stick to you permanently.

The truth is, Vietnam doesn't have one weather system. It has three.

The North behaves like it's trying to be East Asia. The South acts like a tropical island. The Central Coast seems determined to keep everyone guessing.

That's why so many travelers ask the same question:

"When is the best time to visit Vietnam?"

The answer depends on where you're going.

Don't worry—we've done the hard work for you.

This complete Vietnam weather guide will help you choose the perfect time to visit, avoid costly mistakes, and plan a trip you'll actually enjoy.

The Complete Guide to Vietnam Weather: Plan Your Trip Like a Pro!

Planning a neat two week trip to Vietnam that catches “good weather everywhere” is basically a pipe dream. But planning smartly? Completely doable. You just have to get the three zones first.

The North: Mist, Sweat, and No In-Between

Sa Pa mountains

Hanoi and the northern highlands have a four-season logic, which sounds civilised until you live through it.

It’s not the romantic cool-breeze kind of winter (November to March) up here. In January Sapa is like inside a refrigerator, but it was also made damp. The highlands cool to between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius, and the mist lies so low over the mountains that you can't see your hand in front of your face. Sure, it’s dramatic and beautiful, but pack like you’re going to Scotland, not Southeast Asia. Hanoi itself is hanging out around 15-20°C and remains grey for weeks. Locals sport puffer jackets. You probably should.

Summer (May-September) is a whole other kind of disaster. Hanoi is a Vietnamese sauna in July. All of a sudden it starts raining heavily, like a 45-minute downpour, and then it's gone.

To be honest, the sweet spots in the North are April and October. Cool enough to walk comfortably and clear enough to see the rice terraces of Sapa for real.

The Central Coast: Beautiful, Treacherous, Poorly Timed

Pictures of Da Nang and Hoi An look like paradise. They are paradise, for the right five months of the year.

Central Vietnam’s weather lives up to its postcard reputation from February to May. Temperatures are nice at 24-30° C. The sea is calm and impossibly blue, and each night the ancient town of Hoi An shines in real golden light. This is the window and you can book it without any doubt.

Now, let's talk about the rain. September through November is typhoon season on the Central coast and it doesn’t play. As the North heads into summer, those are survivable, not dramatic, afternoon storms.

June through August is hot and mostly dry on the coast. If you respect the heat it is manageable. Pack light and stay close to water.

The South: The Reliable One

Ham Ninh, Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc have a clean and predictable two-season system.

Dry season is from November to April, Vietnam's temperature is in the range of 27-35°C. The beaches of Phu Quoc are always clear and seem like a luxury resort brand that has been photoshopped into reality. The rainy season is May to October.

Vietnam Weather by month: The Honest Vibe Check

  • January Sapa is cold and misty with temperatures between 8-15°C in the highlands. It’s grey and chilly in Hanoi, between 15 and 20 degrees.
  • February: Central awakens. This is when Hoi An starts to come alive. In Da Nang, the temperature is 21-26 degrees Celsius, the sea is calm and the whole country turns into a huge chaos of celebrations during the Tet holiday (which takes place in late January or February).
  • March: The sweet spot comes in. It is one of the best months to visit Vietnam. The North is shaking off the winter blues with temperatures in Hanoi ranging from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. The Central is located in the most beautiful Vietnamese climate with temperatures from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius. The South ain't hot yet.
  • April: Still Golden. April is a great time to visit Hoi An. Hanoi gets hot at 22-27C. The South climbs to 34-36°C, hot but bearable near the coast. Peak tourist crowds. Peak reasons to be there.
  • May: It's the month of transition, the south region is getting wet, so Hanoi is sweating. Central is still good, but watch the weekend forecast. Good time for budget travelers since prices are not at peak.
  • June: Summer heat everywhere this month! Hanoi is very hot (32-36 degrees celsius) and humid. The Central is hot and dry, which is actually pretty great for the seasoned traveler who isn’t afraid of the heat. “South: Rain in the afternoon.
  • July & August: The North receives its heaviest rainfall. Sapa trekking can be unpredictable and sometimes dangerous due to flash floods in mountainous areas. Hanoi is 34-38C with stifling humidity. Paradoxically, it is one of its drier months on the Central Coast. It’s budget-travel season, and it’s budget-travel season only because fewer people want to deal with the heat.
  • September: Typhoon season in Vietnam. Avoid Central Vietnam this month, unless you fancy spending your days sitting in a flooded guesthouse watching your beach plans wash away. The North is cooling down a little. Phu Quoc gets nasty.
  • October: Hanoi is very nice at 24-28°C. The rice harvest starts, the countryside turns golden and this is when the iconic Mu Cang Chai terraced hillside photos are taken. But the Central Coast is in the height of typhoon risk. I'm going to pass hard on Da Nang this month.
  • November: The great reset button to Vietnam’s weather, as the dry season kicks in in the south. Central typhoon threat subsides. Hanoi cools down to a comfortable 20-25°C. This could be the most underrated month for a north to south trip.
  • December: Tourist Season, Weather at its best. Phu Quoc is absolute perfection (27-30°C, glassy waters). Hanoi is very festive at 16-22 C. Now is the perfect time to visit Hoi An. It’s tourist season so prices will be high and crowds heavy but the weather in all three places will be as good as it gets..

The Final Verdict: When Should You Actually Go?

Nha Trang Beach, Vietnam
Nha Trang Beach, Vietnam

Late November to early January is amazingly well. The South is in its driest time of year, and the Central Coast is coming out of typhoon season. The North is crisp and clear. A little dear, but the Vietnamese climate is as seldom cooperative.

Probably better is March into early April. The winter is leaving North without the humidity of summer yet. Central in the most beautiful. The South has not yet gone into wet season mode.
